(Backup) Exploring numeracy through our routines

During our morning routine we always explore different ways of combining numbers and patterns to represent the date. Since the 1st we have been learning about the numbers that are friends who add up to ten. This is represented as a rainbow.

Some of the children have been able to begin recognising the pattern of one side of the rainbow having numbers ascending and the other side of the rainbow descending. Some children have begun to understand that starting from one number and following the rainbow leads to its 'friend' and that these numbers added together combine to make a total of ten. Many children are already familiar with 5 and 5 making ten through their hands. This has helped to build on that understanding and extend some of the children who are ready for it.
